IPH Director of Ageing Research & Development Professor Roger O’Sullivan recently spoke to the Irish Times ‘In The News’ podcast about why loneliness should be a priority for governments and how the Covid-19 pandemic challenged our perception of loneliness.
This 20-minute podcast episode begins with Eimear McGovern, Assistant News Editor of the Belfast Telegraph, who shares her experiences of loneliness, and then hears from Professor O’Sullivan about the need to adopt a public health approach to tackle loneliness.
The podcast follows a recent editorial published in the British Medical Journal which highlighted the need for governments to recognise the personal, social, and economic costs of loneliness. The joint editorial, which was written by Professors Roger O’Sullivan (IPH), Gerry Leavey from the Bamford Centre (Ulster University) and Brian Lawlor from the Global Brain Health Institute (Trinity College Dublin), can be accessed here
