Breastfeeding is a universal solution that levels the playing field, giving everyone a fair start in life. It improves the health, wellbeing and survival of women and children around the world – World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action.
The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is the voice for the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding across the globe. WABA coordinates World Breastfeeding Week every year and this year the slogan is Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life.
There are four objectives for World Breastfeeding Week 2018:
IPH work on breastfeeding:
- In October 2017, IPH released an all-island report on the breastfeeding rates across the island of Ireland. This report highlighted that in the Republic of Ireland between 2006 and 2015, breastfeeding rates at discharge from hospital increased from 49% to 58% – a nine percentage point rise. In the same period in Northern Ireland, breastfeeding rates at discharge increased by five percentage points – from 40% to 45%.
- In 2013/4 IPH completed an extensive review of the implementation of breastfeeding policy in the Republic of Ireland which informed the direction of Breastfeeding in a Healthy Ireland - Health Service Breastfeeding Action Plan 2016 – 2021.
