The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has released guidelines on how environment design can be used to increase physical activity of the population. The guidelines are aimed at local authorities, town and community planners, transport planners and others responsible for the development of the built environment.
The guidelines include recommendations on:
- Strategies, policies and plans to increase physical activity in the local environment
- Active travel
- Public open spaces
Currently, about 55% of people in Northern Ireland meet the World Health Organization physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week. Similarly in the Republic of Ireland, this figure is 56%.
