In May IPH submitted a written response to a request from the Northern Ireland Committee for Regional Development for evidence for the need for legislation to introduce a 20mph speed limit on residential roads. This was followed up by oral evidence given by IPH and a number of other interested parties to the Committee on 17 June. A number of points highlighted by IPH included:
- A person is seven times more likely to survive if hit by a car travelling at 20mph rather than 30mph
- Lowering the speed limit to 20mph reduces collisions between vehicles and children by up to 70%
- Research shows the impact of pedestrian fatality drops from 7% at 30mph to 1% at 20mph
