The Institute of Public Health (IPH) today attended the All Party Group (APG) on Reducing Harm Related to Gambling in Northern Ireland.
Dr Joanna Purdy, IPH Public Health Development Officer, and Dr Helen McAvoy, IPH Director of Policy, provided evidence to the APG, which is undertaking an inquiry into public health approaches to gambling-related harms in Northern Ireland.
In its opening statement, the Institute said a public health approach is needed to address the scale and severity of gambling harms in Northern Ireland, where high rates of problem gambling are evident.
The Institute previously presented to the APG in January 2021 and has also provided evidence to the Committee for Communities on the Betting, Gaming, Lotteries and Amusements (Amendment) Act and responded to a consultation on the Gambling Codes of Practice in Northern Ireland in February 2022.
